BaZi means Eight Characters. It is a Chinese traditional chart and interpretation practice using year, month, day and hour pillars, each with a Heavenly Stem and Earthly Branch. This site explains its vocabulary as cultural and reflective material. The chart is not a scientific measurement of personality, health or future events.

BaZi has been used for divination as well as reflection. We present traditional interpretations as beliefs and metaphors, not validated predictions or psychological assessments. A chart cannot establish what will happen to you or another person. Use observable evidence and qualified advice for consequential decisions.

Birth time affects the Hour Pillar, and a time interval can cross a branch, day or solar-term boundary. Our calculator uses approximate solar terms and a Beijing-time convention; it is not a precision historical calendar or a complete local-time conversion service. If the time is unknown, do not treat a guessed hour as a known fact. Compare possible inputs only as an uncertainty exercise.

The Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar. Traditional descriptions attach symbolic images to its ten possible values. These are not personality diagnoses or career recommendations. Many people share a Day Master and a full chart; neither is a unique personal identifier.

Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water are categories used in traditional Chinese systems. Their generating and controlling cycles describe relationships within that symbolic framework. A count of these labels is not a medical test, nutritional assessment or measure of someone's character. See our Five Elements guide for the terminology.

A year-animal label uses one part of a traditional calendar; a BaZi chart includes four pillars. Both are shared classifications, not uniquely identifying profiles. Year boundaries also depend on the convention: Lunar New Year and Li Chun are different boundaries. Confirm which convention a tool uses before comparing results.
