Wu Xing (五行), often translated as Five Elements or Five Phases, is a traditional system of correspondences. This page explains its categories for cultural study. The categories are not chemical elements, medical measurements or evidence of a person's traits.

The Five Elements are not what things ARE — they describe what things DO. Wood is the energy of growth, not literal trees. Fire is transformation, not just flames.

The Two Great Cycles

The Five Elements interact through two fundamental cycles that govern all relationships in your BaZi chart:

The Creative Cycle (Sheng )

Each element generates the next in a nourishing sequence: Wood fuels Fire → Fire creates Earth (ash) → Earth bears Metal → Metal generates Water (a traditional correspondence, not a scientific explanation) → Water nourishes Wood. This is the cycle of support, growth, and natural flow.

The Control Cycle (Ke )

Each element restrains another to maintain balance: Wood penetrates Earth → Earth dams Water → Water extinguishes Fire → Fire melts Metal → Metal cuts Wood. This isn't about destruction — it's about regulation. Without control, any element would dominate and create imbalance.

The Five Elements in Depth

Wood — Growth & Expansion

Direction: East · Season: Spring · Planet: Jupiter · Color: Green

Wood is associated with new beginnings, growth and flexibility in symbolic descriptions. These images can be used in a writing exercise, but a birth-chart label does not demonstrate that a person has particular strengths, deficits or health conditions.

Traditional body correspondences (not diagnostic): Liver, gallbladder, tendons, eyes.

Fire — Passion & Transformation

Direction: South · Season: Summer · Planet: Mars · Color: Red

Fire is associated with warmth, visibility and change in symbolic descriptions. These images can be used in a writing exercise, but a birth-chart label does not demonstrate that a person has particular strengths, deficits or health conditions.

Traditional body correspondences (not diagnostic): Heart, small intestine, blood vessels, tongue.

Earth — Stability & Nourishment

Direction: Center · Season: Late Summer · Planet: Saturn · Color: Yellow/Brown

Earth is associated with stability, cultivation and support in symbolic descriptions. These images can be used in a writing exercise, but a birth-chart label does not demonstrate that a person has particular strengths, deficits or health conditions.

Traditional body correspondences (not diagnostic): Spleen, stomach, muscles, mouth.

Metal — Structure & Refinement

Direction: West · Season: Autumn · Planet: Venus · Color: White

Metal is associated with structure, refinement and boundaries in symbolic descriptions. These images can be used in a writing exercise, but a birth-chart label does not demonstrate that a person has particular strengths, deficits or health conditions.

Traditional body correspondences (not diagnostic): Lungs, large intestine, skin, nose.

Water — Wisdom & Adaptability

Direction: North · Season: Winter · Planet: Mercury · Color: Black/Blue

Water is associated with movement, depth and adaptation in symbolic descriptions. These images can be used in a writing exercise, but a birth-chart label does not demonstrate that a person has particular strengths, deficits or health conditions.

Traditional body correspondences (not diagnostic): Kidneys, bladder, bones, ears.

Element Balance in Your BaZi Chart

A calculator can count element labels under its stated rules. A small or missing count is not a deficiency in your body or character and does not establish a need for a supplement, crystal, colour or treatment. Traditional readers may weigh season and other chart relationships differently; a simple bar chart is not an agreed diagnostic method.
